KABAYAN Partylist REP. RON SALO LAUDS PBBM,SPEAKER'S ROLE IN ENSURING SAFETY OF STRANDED PINOY SAILORS IN RED SEA
Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo gave special mention to President Marcos and Speaker Martin Romualdez as he expressed his gratitude to everybody who played a key role in ensuring the safety of 23 Filipino seafarers who were left stranded following a missile attack on their tanker in the Red Sea.
In a statement on Sunday, Aug. 25, Salo said the guidance from the country’s top leaders was crucial in mobilizing the necessary resources and support for the seafarers during a challenging time.
“The leadership shown by our President and Speaker has been pivotal in navigating this complex situation. Their support underscores the importance of protecting the lives and welfare of our seafarers,” he said.
The Filipino seafarers, alongside two Russians, were onboard the Greek-flagged MT Sounion when they were hit by missiles from Yemen's Houthi rebels.
The ship sustained engine damage from three missile strikes, leaving it adrift west of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said no one was hurt or injured during the incident.
"This incident reminds us of the unpredictable and dangerous conditions our seafarers face. We must remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring their safety and well-being wherever they may be deployed," Salo stressed.
The rescue, he said, marks a “major achievement” for DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac, who recently secured confirmation for his appointment as the agency’s head after four months of ad interim status.
"Secretary Cacdac's leadership has been exemplary, and this successful operation reflects his unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of our overseas workers,” noted Salo.
“This early accomplishment under his stewardship sets a strong tone for the Department’s continued efforts in protecting our migrant workers,” he added.
The lawmaker said the quick response and dedication to securing the safety of the Filipino seafarers were instrumental in protecting their lives.
Salo also acknowledged the contributions of the European Union (EU) and the private sector, including manning agencies and shipowners, for their swift action in managing this crisis.
"The concerted efforts of our private sector partners and international allies have been invaluable in ensuring the safety and well-being of our seafarers. Their prompt and coordinated actions are a testament to their unwavering commitment to the protection of OFWs abroad,” he said.
As the situation continues to develop, Salo called on the DMW, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and other relevant agencies to ensure that the necessary assistance was ready to be provided for the seafarers and their families.
"While we are relieved that our seafarers are safe, our work is not yet done. We must ensure that their journey home is smooth and that they receive the comprehensive care they need,” the veteran congressman continued.
Salo, who formerly headed the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, said medical attention, financial assistance, and access to essential services should be ready.
In particular, he said the Department of Health (DOH) should be involved in providing mental health services for the returning seafarers.
"The trauma these individuals have experienced is significant, and it is imperative that we address not only their physical health but also their mental well-being," he emphasized.(PR via Mike Navarro)
