FILIPINO SEAFARERS CHARGED WITH SMUGGLING OF ILLEGAL DRUGS IN TURKEY ACQUITTED
Rep. Salo commended the relentless efforts of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Philippine Embassy in Turkey, which played an instrumental role in securing the acquittal of the seafarers. Since their arrest, the Embassy worked closely with the company’s legal team and hired private lawyers to aid in their defense.
Ambassador Henry Bensurto and the Embassy team attended all court hearings, which took place in Erigle, a four-hour drive from Ankara, and regularly visited the seafarers at Sincan Penitentiary. They also kept the seafarers’ families in the Philippines informed throughout the legal process, providing updates on the progress of the case and the condition of their loved ones.
The seafarers—Eddie Abello, Pather John Bobiles, Junil Dalumpines, Danvis Ruales, John Sulima, and Ariel Carmelo Vargas—were aboard the Phoenician M when Turkish authorities arrested them under allegations of drug smuggling. However, after months of legal proceedings and strong advocacy by the Philippine government and the Embassy in Turkey, the court ruled in their favor, clearing them of all charges.
“These seafarers have endured a grueling and emotional ordeal,” said Rep. Salo. “I am very happy that they will finally be going home to be with their families and loved ones after going through such a harrowing and painful experience. Their strength and resilience and truly admirable,” Salo added.
Rep. Salo also recognized the role of the families of the seafarers, acknowledging how difficult it must have been for them to be separated from their loved ones while facing the uncertainty of the resolution of the case. “The seafarers’ families have been strong pillars throughout this difficult ordeal, standing by their loved ones despite the challenges. Rest assured that your loved ones will be coming home safe and sound.”
The repatriation of the acquitted seafarers is set for September 28, 2024. They are currently being held at Akyurt Detention Center and will be transferred to Istanbul Airport under the supervision of Turkish authorities.
Ambassador Bensurto personally met with the seafarers earlier today in Ankara and confirmed that they are in good health and high spirits, eager to return home. Rep. Salo expressed his deep appreciation for Ambassador Bensurto’s personal involvement and the Embassy’s comprehensive efforts, stating, “I would like to thank Ambassador Bensurto for his dedication and hands-on approach in ensuring the welfare of our seafarers. His presence and the Embassy’s constant support were crucial in this case.”
Upon their return, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) are also ready to assist the seafarers upon their return. “DMW and OWWA are prepared to provide support to our seafarers as they reintegrate with their families and communities. They stand ready to offer medical assistance, counseling, and financial aid to help ease their transition back to normal life,” Salo said.
Rep. Salo also praised the Philippine government’s broader efforts to protect the welfare of Filipino seafarers, whose contributions are critical to the global maritime industry. “This acquittal is not only a victory for the six seafarers but also a reminder of the crucial role our government plays in ensuring justice for every Filipino overseas. We must continue to stand with our Filipino seafarers, whose skills and dedication drive the world’s maritime trade.”
Rep. Salo emphasized that this case should inspire further commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). He concluded, “As these seafarers prepare to return home, we celebrate not only their freedom but also the perseverance of everyone who worked tirelessly for their release. I encourage all maritime stakeholders and government agencies to remain steadfast in ensuring that every Filipino worker abroad is given the protection and justice they deserve.”
